On March 3, Northern’s Speech and Debate team drove to Athens, Ohio, for the Pi Kappa Delta National speech & debate tournament. Members of NSU’s Speech and Debate team in attendance were Jefferson Gunderson, Joe Kvale, Corey Klatt, Joshua Hinkemeyer, Jordan Wold and Julia Wold. Approximately 79 other teams attended the tournament, including many teams from big named universities.
According to Dr. Anthony Wachs, who is in his fourth year as NSU’s Speech and Debate coach, the tournament went well, and he was very proud of how his team performed.
Klatt and Hinkemeyer placed sixth in Junior Parliamentary Debate. Hinkemeyer also received an excellent in Dramatic Interpretation. He was in the top 20% out of 101 candidates in Dramatic Interpretation.
There is a long tradition of success for the NSU Speech and Debate team. They participate in several events throughout the tournament season and have been attending the national tournament for several years.
When asked, Wachs commented on the financial aspect of the program, stating “Every dollar counts. Each year, all of our funding goes toward tournaments and making sure people are able to go and have a good time.”
Wachs has no doubt in the dedication of the team, and he believes that their success in the future is fairly strong.
The commitment and success of current members inspires younger members (and potential members) of the team.
