The Northern State University wrestling team tallied three championship round wrestlers at the Dakota Wesleyan Open. Tyler Stenberg (Jr.) earned the 149 pound title, while Blake Perryman (So.) and Joe Gomez (Jr.) too second at 157 and 197 pounds.
A total of eight wrestlers hit the mat for the Wolves on the day with a combined record of 18-11. Kenny Mcaleavey (Fr.) went 1-2 from the open with a win by fall at 6:48 against Carey from CU. Anthony Navarro (Sr.) lost his opening match but fought back through the consolation bracket with two wins. Navarro recorded both wins by decision with scores of 11-3 and 8-6 to finish 2-2 on the day.
Grant Steen (Jr.) and Perryman both took on the 157 pound bracket. Steen was 3-2 on the day decision wins of 5-4, 11-0, and 5-4. Perryman wrestled strong through the opening matches of the bracket making his way to the championship round. The sophomore recorded three decision wins of 4-3, 13-9, and 11-8 and a win by fall at 1:21 in his second match of the day. Blake ultimately fell 14-6 to Lule of Concordia, however earned his first second place finish of 2015.
Gomez went 3-1 on the day with a 7-3 victory over Null of Northwestern. Joe opened the day with a 12-3 major decision victory, and ultimately fell in the championship match with a score of 7-5.
Stenberg went a perfect 5-0 to take the 149 DWU Open title. Stenberg opened the day with a 18-2, technical fall victory over Spadoni of Briar Cliff. He rolled through the next two rounds with a win by fall at 5:50 and 13-4 major decision victory. Tyler took down Miller of Grandview in the semifinals 7-1 and finally defeated Neises of Augustana 9-2 to take the crown.
Next up for the Wolves is the Sanford Pentagon SD Showdown December 6. The Wolves will take on in-state opponents South Dakota State, Augustana, and Dakota Wesleyan in three separate duals beginning at 1 p.m. in Sioux Falls.
