Wolves Take Down the Marauders 73-70 in OT

JANUARY 9th

The Northern State women’s basketball team picked up an overtime victory against the University of Mary tonight by a final score of 73-70. The Wolves are now 5-0 from home, notching their seventh consecutive win. NSU is 12-3 overall on the year and 8-2 in the conference, placing them on top in the North Division and second in the NSIC, just behind nationally ranked Winona State. The University of Mary drops to 8-10 overall and 2-8 in conference action.
Northern State battled in a match that had 10 lead changes and eight ties in the 45 minutes of play. The Wolves trailed in the fourth quarter with 11.6 seconds left when Lauren Deadrick (sr.) was fouled in the paint. The senior was forced to the free-throw line, but collectively sunk both shots to tie the game and bring NSU to overtime.
The Wolves outshot U-Mary from field goal range 41.7 percent to 34.6 percent. Deadrick proved to be a threat, leading Northern State statistically picking up 18 total points, 15 rebounds, three blocks and two steals. Jill Conrad (so.) followed with 14 total points and nine rebounds, adding to her 12.7 points per game. Devon Brecke (sr.) was the third Wolf in double-digits with 13 points, and adding a season high eight assists.
Northern State picked up 50 team rebounds, creating 17 points off of second chances. The University of Mary had one less turnover on the night with 14 compared to NSU’s 15, however, both teams recorded 12 points off of those opportunities.
U-Mary forward Hannah Larson exploded for 27 points in the match-up, with 11 total rebounds. The Marauders shot 45.5 percent from beyond the three-point arch, but it was not enough against the aggressive Wolves.
NSU will return home January 15 and 16 to Wachs Arena to host Southwest State at 6 p.m. on Friday night and the University of Sioux Falls at 4 p.m. on Saturday.
