The Northern State University baseball team recorded a day two split versus Minot State University. The Wolves fell in game one 1-0, however bounced back for the 9-4 victory in game two. Northern moves to 14-17 overall and 7-11 in the NSIC with just two weeks remaining in the regular season. Game 1 Both starting pitchers threw a complete out with Tanner Alexander of MSU and Colton Boucher giving up four hits apiece. Boucher settled down after the first inning snafu to record seven strikeouts and six scoreless innings of action. The NSU offense, however, struggled to get things going, leaving all four runners on base. Tyler Gripentrog. Ben Allen, Lucas Lorenz, and Easton Lopez tallied the team’s four singles in the loss, while Kolin Kubitz recorded just one at-bat after two successful sacrifice bunts.
Game 2 NSU fell behind early in the second game of the day, as Minot State tallied a run off starter Marcus Manderbach to open the game. Manderbach threw 4.1 innings for the Wolves giving up four earned runs on eight hits. Luke Chevalier entered in relief to throw 4.2 scoreless innings and earn his first win of the season. Down 2-0 heading into the bottom half of the third inning, the Wolves were looking for a spark. Preston Brown bounced a triple off the right center field fence. Brown busted out the extra base hit to put the Wolves in scoring position. Lopez followed with a ball to the centerfielder who misplayed the fly ball. The Beaver gave up the error both scoring Brown and advancing the hustling Lopez to second. After back-to-back strikeouts, Jack Schmidt stepped to the plate and scored Lopez with a single down the left field line. Schmidt came around to score two at-bats later as Allen singled to left, securing the NSU lead. Minot State however battled back for a pair of runs in the fifth, and the Wolves were on their heels again. Northern tied things up in the sixth after a Matt Stubbs RBI single in the fifth, plating Kubitz, and a first and third mishap by the Beavers in the sixth scoring Lorenz. NSU secured the victory in the seventh, led off with a Kubitz single to right. Gripentrog walked in the next at-bat, and the duo advanced into scoring position on a wild pitch by Minot. Kubitz opened the game, scoring on Stubbs single through the five-six hole, while Gripentrog crossed home plate after a stolen base by Stubbs and throwing error by the MSU catcher. Stubbs tallied the final run scored of the inning, as Lorenz singled through the left side. The Wolves headed into the eighth up 8-4 and added another run to secure the win. Stubbs led the team going 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored, while Schmidt went 2-for-5 with both an RBI and a run scored. Kubitz Gripentrog, Allen, Lorenz, Brown, and Lopez rounded out the team total of ten hits in the game.
