The Northern State University cross country teams took on the NSIC Championships from Yankton Trails Park on Saturday. The NSU men finished ninth as a team, with Tanner Peltier as the top finisher. The NSU women finished tied for eighth with Sioux Falls, as Hannah Kastigar was the top finisher landing on the All-Conference first team.
Peltier finished the 8k race with a time of 25:49.37 in 38 overall. Following Peltier were Thomas Horgeshimer and Clay Danielson with times of 26:23.21 and 26:31.72. Five Wolves followed in Logan Swenson, Jackson Goodell, Zac Bartolomeo, Jacob Schweitzer, and Asher Wahl.
“Tanner had a great run today and very nice improvement off of last year’s NSIC meet,” noted head coach Kevin Bjerke. “Logan stepped up in a big way to fill in the gap and allow us to be competitive with some of the teams in the middle of the conference.”
Kastigar finished ninth overall in the first cross country race of her Northern State career. The Wolves junior hit the line at 21:12.12 finishing less than two minutes behind the leader. Paige Larson and Lindsey Gast landed in the top-40 with times of 22:17.24 and 22:28.08. Madison Leapaldt and Courtney Espeland were the final finishers for the Wolves both crossing the line in the 23rd minute.
“Hannah was coming off maybe six hours of sleep after swimming in Moorhead the night before. The gun went off today, and she immediately shot into the top-5 and held on to a top-10 finish,” added Bjerke. “Paige had some nice improvement from last year, with her and Lindsey pushing each other all season long. Courtney capped of her senior year with her best race of her career which was great to see.”
The Wolves will return to action Saturday, November 5, for the NCAA Central Region Championships from Yankton Trails in Sioux Falls. The women will race at 11a.m. and the men will race at 1p.m.
