Schmidt and Hoffard Garner Preseason Baseball Accolades

   The Northern State University baseball team is set to kick off the 2017 season in just about a month. Prior to first pitch, two Wolves garnered preseason regional and national honors from the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association. Nick Hoffard and Jack Schmidt both earned All-Region awards, while Schmidt was also named to the All-America first team.
   Schmidt led the team with 81 hits, 18 doubles, 44 RBI, and .460 average. He tallied a 19-game hitting streak through the middle part of the season and broke the single season hits record with his 72nd of the year.
   Hoffard was named the NSIC Newcomer of the Year after tallying a team leading seven wins and 14 appearances. He threw 71.1 innings with 21 strikeouts and a 4.16 ERA. He tallied a 1.33 ERA in league games to lead to the NSIC.
   Northern will open the 2017 season on March 4 versus Concordia-St. Paul at 10a.m. from the Tucson Invitational.
