Administrator Spotlight: Stacey Schmidt

Stacey Schmidt

Stacey Schmidt, International Student Coordinator at Northern State University’s Office of International Programs, is “mother” to 200 international students attending Northern State University, from more than 30 countries.
Schmidt is from Leola, South Dakota, and she is also an alumnus of Northern State University. This is her 25th year at NSU.
Schmidt really has closer to a 30 year connection with Northern, though, through the annual  Gypsy Days celebration, as her junior high and high school marching bands performed in the parade.
Schmidt has a very active involvement with international student activities. She is the advisor of several international students clubs, such as International Student Counsel, Korean Student Association, Chinese Student Association, Saudi Student Club, and Karen Club. She is also coordinator of the CultureFest Committee, and she plans the annual CultureFest, which is the most important event to international students on campus.
Schmidt is especially proud of students who have studied at Northern State University and are still doing great when they return home. One student is working at Office of International Programs at a university in Korea, and Schmidt is trying to coordinate an exchange agreement between that university and Northern State.
Schmidt was born and spent most of her life in the South Dakota countryside, so she is a big fan of the rodeo. She is involved in Miss Rodeo, 4-H Rodeo, High School Rodeo,  and other rodeo activities happening in Aberdeen. During her summer vacation, she enjoys bull riding with her family. As Schmidt states, “Rodeo is a huge part of my life!”
Outside of her love for the rodeo, Schmidt also enjoys camping and spending time with her family members — including her lovely husband, children, grandchildren, and puppies.
When Schmidt is not spending time with her family, the rest of her summer vacation is dedicated to preparing for new international students who will be arriving in the fall semester.
This preparation includes helping students to register for classes and apply for residence halls and doing VISA paperwork. Additionally, Schmidt usually attends the annual conference for international student advisors, NAFSA: Association of International Educators. NAFSA stands for National Association for Foreign Student Advisors.
This conference is a great way to meet international student advisors from other countries to make contracts for new international programs for students.
