Wolves Split with Beavers in First Midweek Road Games

   NSU baseball split with Bemidji State University in their second midweek double header of the 2017 season. Following the day the Wolves move to 9-15 overall and 2-10 in league action.
   The Wolves went down early in the first game as the Beavers tallied one run in the bottom of the second. NSU tied things up in the fourth, however BSU answered with five runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning. The two team’s again traded scores in the third with three runs by the Wolves and one run by the Beavers. Northern added another run in the seventh, however the Wolves were unable to overcome the deficit and suffered their 15th loss of the season.
   Northern out-hit the Beavers in the contest with ten hits, including a double by Seth Sullwold. Sullwold was one of four Wolves with two hits in the game. Chris Gonzales led the team going 2-for-2 with an RBI and run scored, while Lucas Lorenz and Mikey Barreneche each went 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI. Ben Carolin and Mike Severson tallied the final two hits for the Wolves with singles in the game.
   Sam Krapf suffered his third loss of the season throwing 3.1 innings. Isaiah Greene and Nate Zeise entered in relief for the Wolves. Krapf led the staff with two strikeouts, while Zeise gave up just one earned run.
   The NSU offense exploded in game two with 16 hits and eight runs scored, as the Wolves defeated the Beavers 8-4 for their second conference victory of the year. The Wolves hit .400 as a team with runs scored in the first, third, and fifth. Northern tallied two extra base hits in the win, and went errorless on defense.
   Jack Schmidt and Sullwold led the team in game two with three hits apiece. Schmidt with 3-for-4 with three runs score and a walk, while Sullwold went 3-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI. Carolin, Lorenz and Gonzales each notched multiple hits in the win, as Lorenz and Gonzales each recorded a double. Barreneche, Tyler Gripentrog, Easton Lopez, and Ashton Williamson rounded out the team total with a single each.
   Nick Hoffard started on the hill for the Wolves and threw a complete seven innings in his second win of the season. Hoffard gave up four earned runs on seven hits and struck out three. Rylan Shimer entered in relief and held the Beavers scoreless for the final two innings. The junior gave up just one walk and did not allow a hit.
   Northern returns home April 8 and 9, for a 4-game series against Southwest Minnesota State. First pitch is scheduled for 4p.m. on Saturday and 12p.m. on Sunday from Fossum Field.
