Faculty Spotlight: Dr. Sara Schmidt

Dr. Sara Schmidt, NSU Assistant Professor of Accounting

   A graduate from the University of Mary, Dr. Sara Schmidt is an Assistant Professor in the School of Business here at Northern State University.
   After graduating college, Dr. Schmidt worked in public accounting until 2008 when she started teaching at NSU. Now, nearly ten years later, she is the co-chair of the School of Business.
   In addition to her work here at Northern, Dr. Schmidt is working with the Secretary of State of South Dakota to produce the economic indicator that will include the business leader indicator, which focuses on individual businesses and helps to see the future of businesses in South Dakota.
   Dr. Schmidt is also the faculty advisor for the Accounting Club. The club hosts two main fundraiser activities each year. The first is a charity event that helps to give back to the community. Last year the club assisted the New Beginnings Center, holding a fundraiser for the organization. The other event was a fundraiser for the club itself.
   The club also helps out with the annual Northern Night, a large scholarship fundraising event organized by the NSU Foundation. Members of the Accounting Club often volunteer their time to work the event as coat checkers.
   In recognition of her dedication to her students and other commitments, Dr. Schmidt received the Outstanding Faculty Award for the 2014-2015 academic year.
