The Northern State University softball team clinched a spot in the NSIC Tournament with a split of Upper Iowa. The Wolves concluded NSIC play with a record of 14-15-1, heading into the tournament 29-24-1 overall. Northern will face the University of Sioux Falls from Sherman Park on Thursday.
As a team, Northern State is currently batting .290 with a slugging percentage of .405. The Wolves have combined for 26 homeruns, a single season record of 76 team doubles and 232 RBIs for an average of 4.56 runs scored each game.
Sophomore Jenna Helgeson continues to propel the NSU offense with an average of .361, with a team-high eight homeruns and 36 runs batted in. Freshmen Kennady Thompson and Shayla Steinley have followed up with averages of .316 and .315 respectively.
From the mound, Jamie Fisher and Missy Elkins each recorded a win last week, as well as Rachel Albright with a save versus Upper Iowa. Albright leads the team with an ERA of 2.27, while Fisher has held opponents to an average of .271. Elkins has a team high 13 wins and 82 total strikeouts on the year.
The Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference released May2 the 2017 All-Conference teams, with Thompson landing an award as a Gold Glove defender for the Wolves.
Starting all 30 conference games for Northern State, the third baseman closed out league play with 26 putouts and 51 assists, including two turned double plays from the left side. Thompson finished atop the NSIC with a fielding percentage of .987.
In her first season with the Wolves, the freshman continues to excel from both sides of the field, batting .316 offensively with ten doubles, 13 walks and 24 runs batted in.
No. 10 seeded Northern State will open the first round of the NSIC Tournament May 4 from Sherman Park against the No. 7 seeded University of Sioux Falls.
